Invercargill Brewery

Big beers now in small packages

Invercargill Brewery is cutting its big beers down to chiller-friendly size.

The battle over stubby versus tall has polarized the boutique beer industry with some customers insisting boutique beers need to be big, and others preferring the familiarity of the stubby bottle.

Brewer Steve Nally has always defied convention so it was not surprising when Invercargill Brewery opted for both the big and the small.

“We decided to put our seasonal range – all very distinctive brews aimed at the beer appreciator – into bigger long-neck bottles and while our standard range stayed small.”

Now all the brewery’s beers will be packaged exclusively in 330ml longnecks, the decision to change the forced by the manufacturer O-I, who announced at Christmas the 640 ml long neck was no longer available.

“It was a bit of a shock – apparently they’d forgotten to tell us,” he said.

Boysenbeery is the first seasonal beer to be available in 330ml bottle, to be followed shortly by Dubbel Happy with Smokin’ Bishop to follow from July 1.

Invercargill Brewery standard labels include Pitch Black, Wasp, B.man, Stanley Green and Nally’s Cider with Boysenbeery and Smokin’ Bishop in its seasonal line-up.
