Golden Ticket Brewing
Young, thirsty and eager to see where their ‘golden ticket’ takes them, Nathan Crabbe and Alistair “Ally” McGilvray are a couple of beer brewing mates who have boldly taken the next step – to share their beer with the rest of New Zealand.
Having brewed about 50 beers between them, the Christchurch based pair bring complimentary styles and tastes to the partnership.
Nathan is interested in the science and technology behind brewing and has a continual drive to brew the perfect beer. After some time spent in Austria and at three Oktoberfests his favourite beers are dark German-style lagers, Bavarian wheat beers, and he has a fondness for IPAs.
Ally’s style is more experimental and adaptive, trying to achieve an end product as something revelatory. He’s rather partial to drinking something big and hoppy like American West Coast IPAs.
Their collaborative approach works very well for Golden Ticket Brewing as it gives them the right balance for what they want to do – create interesting beers that taste great.
Now they’ve teamed up with Steve Nally of Invercargill Brewery to help them realise that goal. Not only does Steve have the brewery and the expertise, these guys have faith in one of the country’s greatest brewers.
Their aim for Golden Ticket Brewing is to produce one-off batches of new and different beers, 3 or 4 times a year, that work with the seasons. They’re already working on pilot brews for a summer release and have a few ideas tucked away for the future based on beers they’ve created over the past few years.
Doing one-off batches allows them to experiment a bit more with styles they hope people are going to enjoy. In terms of goals, as long as people like what they’re brewing, they’ll consider themselves successful.
“We chose the name ‘The Exchange Student’ for our debut beer as we’re going to be the new face in the beer market and we’re hoping to be as different and interesting as exchange students are,” the duo said.
