Pitch Black Bike ranks 2nd
Invercargill motorbike racer John Crawford finished his debut season of the South Island Super Motard Championship in a creditable second place.
The series, decided over nine races during meets at Ruapuna, Teretonga and the Levels Raceways, ended on Sunday with novice rider Crawford just three points behind Dunedin’s Hayden Scorring.
Crawford, who took up motard in April last year said he was “pretty stoked” with his first season.
“It was frustrating to be so close – and definitely something to aim for,” Crawford said.
The popularity of motard – which involves racing a motocross bike on a circuit with road tyres – is soaring with record classes at events throughout New Zealand in recent months. A field of 20 riders contested the South Island title, and hopefully next year there will be a New Zealand title to aim for.
Crawford’s Suzuki machine Pitch Black was regarded as one of the most competitive motard weapons available, capable of speeds around 190kmh.
“They’re actually pretty unbeatable in the 450 class … it will be very quick.”
Invercargill Brewery’s award-winning Pitch Black stout was a perfect sponsor.
“It’s my favourite of all their beers and it fits with the theme of the bike,” Crawford said.
“And it’s great to have a cold one on hand after an event.”
Crawford raced motocross and Formula 3 for 15 years before putting his helmet on the shelf in 2006. It was the challenge of a new style of racing that enticed him back onto the track last year.
